Kirsten Perry
I am a Melbourne/Naarm based ceramic artist with a background in Fine Art (Gold & Silversmithing), Industrial Design and Multimedia. I’m a self-taught ceramicist. I predominately slip cast mid-fired functional and non-functional vessels that pay homage to traditional ceramics.
The bio-morphic objects I create are initially carved from disposable materials such as foam and cardboard, then translated into ceramic. Something is gained in this translation; somehow more than the evidence of my process, such as the hope and joy that difference can offer. My process highlights the texture of the foam and cardboard and often exaggerates imperfection. I am attracted to flaws and vulnerabilities. The objects have an unusual beauty — what I imagine to be some sort of living organism from a planet far away.
I acknowledge the tradional owners Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation as the traditional custodians of the unceded land and waters where I live and work and pay my deepest respect to Elders past, present and emerging. It's a privilege to walk this land together.
